A Prospective Randomized Controlled Trial between Wound Dressing Containing Silk Sericin and Tulle Gauze in Split-thickness Donor Sites Wound Healing

Background: A wound dressing containing silk Sericin, is the substance enabling to enrich the growth of skin cell. Early studies found that a wound dressing containing silk Sericin as developed by Faculty of Pharmacy, Chulalongkorn University could quickly heal wounds without collateral effects both in vitro and in vivo. The objective of this research study will then look into healing outcome of the STSG donor site wounds by this type of dressings.?
Material and Methods: This research study was conducted in form of prospective randomized controlled trial among 28 patients using the STSG, and 30 donor sites available around thighs which were horizontally divided into 2 equal parts. They were randomly administered with the wound dressing containing silk Sericin, or Bactigras®. Records were established on time used for a wound to heal itself after the dressings were removed freely by themselves while the wound was completely dried. Besides, contamination rate of a wound will be recorded. Patients will also be encouraged to pinpoint their pain levels at the wound using visual-analog-scale evaluation form everyday during the first 5-day post-operation period. This includes the electron microscopic examination of used patch to see cell status.?
Results: The healing time for the wounds of the STSG donor site nature using a wound dressing containing silk Sericin, and Bactigras® stands respectively at 14.06 ± 5.41 and 16.27 ± 6.65 days. The average pain level evaluation contributed by patients during their first 5-day post-operation were at 5.65, 5.47, 3.29, 2.5, and 1.54 while the uses of wound dressing containing silk Sericin yield at 9.26, 8.72, 6.34, 3.82, and 2.02. Donor was found and there was a contamination sign in 2 wounds (6.67 %) on those administered with wound dressing containing silk Sericin, while those using Bactigras® show no contamination.
Conclusion: When comparing outcomes of healing wounds, the wound dressing containing silk Sericin, edges Bactigras® in accelerating a little bit the healing process of donor site. Yet, contamination sign was found since there has been no anti-bacteria substance in it. However, during the first three days after operation, certain pain levels around wounds were significantly reduced both in clinical and statistical approaches (p<0.001).
