The Relationship between Social Support Factors and The Paramilitary's Quality of Life

Background of the study : The paramilitary is called “The warrior of the people” was assigned to maintain peacekeeping in operational areas. Being in operational areas may face uncertain events. These events cause stress, life threatening situations, fear and unsafe feelings. Some of them were injured and lost their legs and their arms. Things left behind were their families. Seeking a new job will not be possible due to their suffering and deformities. Since, they dedicated their lives to protect the country; in return they need sufficiently social support and good quality of life.The objectives of the study : were to examine the level of paramilitaries’ quality of life, to investigate the relationship between social support factors and the paramilitary’s quality of life, and to discover problems concerning physical, psychological and social aspects of the paramilitaries. Samples were obtained from73 paramilitaries which were randomly selected from paramilitary Battalion 23, Srisaket Province and Battalion 26, Burirum Province. Research instruments were social support questionnaires and WHOQOL questionnaires with 5 rating scales. Reliability of the research instruments was calculated by Chronbach’s Alpha Coefficient = 0. 8614 and = 0. 8406 respectively.Research findings : The paramilitaries’ quality of life included physical, psychological and social aspects were found to be at moderate levels. The relationship between social support factors which involved social integration, social assistance, nurturing, worth, intimacy and the paramilitaries’ quality of life were significantly correlated at 0.05 ( r=0.209) . No significant physical problems were found. The paramilitaries were found to have psychological problems that mainly consisted of flash backs. The social problems were discovered were the needed career stability and asked to change their status from an employee to being a staff and needed the same rights as an official government worker.
